The treatment of the masseter muscle with botulinum toxin, commonly known by the brand name Botox®, is an aesthetic and therapeutic procedure aimed at reducing hypertrophy (enlargement) of the masseter muscle, located in the face, in the jaw region.
This technique is often used to slim down the face contour, providing a smoother and oval appearance, as well as helping to reduce problems associated with bruxism and tension in this region.
Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerve signals that induce contraction of the masseter muscle. With reduced muscle activity, the muscle tends to decrease in size (slightly atrophy), which can lead to a visually slimmer and less square face. Additionally, reduced muscle activity helps relieve tension and discomfort caused by bruxism.
This treatment is ideal for people who have a very square face due to masseter hypertrophy, suffer from bruxism, or have pain associated with muscle tension in the jaw. It is also recommended for those seeking a non-surgical solution to improve facial aesthetics and reduce jaw discomfort.
The treatment focuses on the masseter muscle, which is located on each side of the jaw. Applying the toxin to this specific area helps relax the muscle and reduce its prominence.
There is no need for extensive preparation before the procedure. However, it is advisable to avoid medications that increase the risk of bruising, such as aspirin and anti-inflammatories, a few days before treatment.
The procedure is quick, usually taking about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Local anesthesia is not required, and the patient can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. However, we recommend avoiding intense physical exercise for 24 hours and sauna for 7 days after treatment.
Most patients report only mild discomfort during the injections, which can be minimized with the use of topical anesthetic cream or ice.
It is common to experience mild swelling or redness at the injection site, which usually subsides within a few hours. In some cases, small bruises may occur, which also resolve quickly. Makeup can be used to conceal any temporary marks immediately after the procedure.
