Biostimulators of Collagen: Rejuvenation and Combating Sagging

What are they?

Collagen bioestimulators are substances capable of stimulating the body’s own production of collagen. Collagen is a protein normally found in the skin that contributes to its elasticity and firmness. As we age, its production tends to decrease, leading to gradually sagging skin.

The main bioestimulators are poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and calcium hydroxyapatite. Once injected, the substance stimulates skin cells (fibroblasts) to gradually produce collagen.

When is it Indicated?

The main indication is the improvement of sagging skin. Through this collagen “boost,” there’s an enhancement in overall skin quality: increased firmness and support, reduction of fine lines and pores. It can also be performed for aging management – the famous “collagen saving,” delaying the effects of aging on the skin.

How is the Treatment Done?

It’s a minimally invasive procedure: the bioestimulator is injected superficially into the skin with a microcannula. The procedure typically lasts around 30 minutes, varying depending on the number of vials and treated areas.

Which Regions Can be Treated?

Besides being a great option for facial treatment, it can also be applied to other areas of the body: hands, neck, chest, abdomen, arms, buttocks, and thighs.

How Should I Prepare for the Treatment?

A pre-procedure consultation is conducted for evaluation and clarification of doubts. Based on each patient, we develop a therapeutic plan (area, number of vials, maintenance). It’s important to note that we can combine other procedures such as hyaluronic acid fillers and microfocused ultrasound for a better aesthetic outcome.

Does it Hurt or Cause Discomfort?

Overall, the application is well-tolerated by patients. For greater comfort, we use topical/injectable anesthesia and vibrating devices and ice. Patients tend to feel more of the skin manipulation than pain.

How Will I Look Immediately After Treatment?

Immediately after application, the area may be slightly swollen and reddened. Small bruises may appear. Typically, these effects last for about 3 to 7 days.

What are the Recommendations After Treatment?

Treatments with bioestimulators are very smooth and safe, so recovery is immediate. In the case of PLLA, we recommend that the patient massages the area for five days. The day after treatment, the patient can return to sports activities. Similarly to hyaluronic acid treatment, we recommend avoiding dental appointments for 15 days before and after treatment.

How Soon After Treatment Will I See Results?

Results may appear between 4 and 6 weeks after the first session, with peak effectiveness occurring after 3 months.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Results can last up to two years, and maintenance sessions may be recommended depending on the degree of sagging and the treated area.
